He added that “in the area where there were oil and gas installations, there were asphalt installations which on June 30 have stopped their operation, and it remains to demolish the last tanks where the asphalt was kept. The liquid fuel companies have already moved away from the coastal front of Larnaca while two of the three have demolished their tanks”.

According to the mayor, “there is only the EXXONMOBIL company left in the area, which was purchased by PETROLINA, and we have assurances that in September-October the demolition of these tanks will begin. LPG is left in the area, and we believe that within the year the new facilities at Vasilikos will be completed to make the move of its facilities”.

In a relevant question, the mayor replied that “whatever development takes place in the area, the first thing we will ensure is respect for the environment, the living conditions of the citizens, that there will be access to the sea and access to the public good called the beach. This is something that we do not discuss, and it is something that we will ensure as Larnaca City Council”.

He explained that “with the movement of liquid fuels, LPG and Asphalt, an area of two and a half kilometers of Larnaca coastal front and several hundred square meters of land is released, next to the city and on one of the most beautiful beaches in Cyprus. From this, everyone understands the attractiveness that this area has for investors for growth”.

In another question, Mr. Vyras said that “there is the area plan that has already been announced and describes what individuals are entitled to build in the area, but also what public works must be done so that the restoration of soil pollution begins and the construction of Public Works begins. Specifically, the first project that must go into the sea by 100 meters, in order to build a public pedestrian street, a public beach and public parks and to unite the coastal front of the area with the coastal front of Finikoudes”.

He also stated that “hotels and residential and office developments will be able to be built in the area. There is already interest and the municipality has communication with two investors for the creation of Technology Parks “he said and noted that”we want productive investments that will bring quality jobs and people to Larnaca, who will live and visit the city, thus helping the local economy”.

Such developments, he continued, ” We will try with the private owners of the land to promote. However, any development carried out in the area of the former refineries will be done with respect to the environmental studies, the area plan which includes that the maximum building height that will be located to the right of the road, IE towards the sea, will be 65 meters”.

As the mayor stated, “Whatever development takes place in the area, the first thing we will ensure is respect for the environment, the living conditions of the citizens, that there will be access to the sea and access to the public good called the beach. This is something that we do not discuss, and it is something that we will ensure as Larnaca City Council”.
