The Municipal Engineer of the municipality of Larnaca, stated that the final vision is the creation, based on backfill, of a coastal Square, open to the public, in the standards of the Limassol Pier. The backfill has been estimated at 100 meters from where the oil facilities are currently located towards the sea. This project will cover the 45-50 meters of Coast estimated to have been lost due to erosion and another 50 meters to create the basis for the projects to follow.

The guidelines for the Larnaca pier are included in the area plan, which was published in August 2020 and is expected to come into force in February 2022. In the Chapter “priority projects”, the backfill and the formation of the coastal front with a coastal waterfront are classified among the “immediate priority projects” that constitute the first phase.

Under the heading “Beach Front formation”, the area plan states that on the basis of relevant studies carried out to protect the coastline from erosion, the need arises to shield most of the beach. In combination with the necessary coast protection projects and after a special Coast engineering study, the plan provides for backfilling and the formation of a public beach area, which through the appropriate design will provide, in addition to the protection of the coastal area, the possibility of creating a multifunctional park along the beach, which is suitable for multiple uses and activities.

The identity of the spaces, according to the strategic planning, will be determined by the variety of flooring, placement of greenery and creation of gardens on unsealed surfaces, properly spaced sunshades using a variety of materials, canals, jets and fountains. Floating structures/ platforms for the purpose of creating living spaces and active entertainment in relation to the sea are also provided at the level of the provisions of the area plan.

The construction projects will be implemented within the framework of a special unified design and the imposition of conditions for their implementation during the licensing of the developments, so that the owners of private properties will be committed to enable the unified design to be executed.

Elements of this network will connect on the one hand the coastal area with the hinterland and on the other hand the area as a whole with the other areas of the city and the island, through the highways. Immediate priority will be given to the implementation of road urban projects related to the improvement, widening and expansion of some existing main roads and at the same time to the implementation of targeted traffic management and recession measures, to alleviate existing pressures on parts of the secondary road network. Redevelopment of the Archangelos-Kamitsi riverbed.

The river Archangelos Kamitsi passing through the area of Design and is a very important natural element and environmental parameter that you need to protect, adorn and exploited, in order to respond in his role as conductor of drainage of rainwater, but, through the appropriate configurations, and as the axis/ lung greenery and space which hosts/ accompanies uses active and passive recreation.

Configurations at selected points of the Coastal Road.

The Larnaca – Dhekelia coastal road passing through the plan area is designated as an axis of primary importance with four lanes of traffic. This makes its crossing by pedestrians and cyclists problematic. The plan provides for the adoption of measures of traffic recession at selected points of this road, where it is necessary to create passages from the mainland to the beach. These configurations may include paving, material change, appropriate markings, etc.

Creation of a network of pedestrian / bicycle paths and connection to Lake Oroklini, Center, coastal pedestrian street.

Alongside the network of watercourses and stormwater canals, the plan also provides for an extensive network of sidewalks and cycle paths that will run through the area of the plan and connect it to the rest of the city areas. The two networks often coexist or even combine, creating interesting water, pedestrian and cyclist marches throughout the territory, achieving critical connections and essentially unifying the functions and important reference points of the wider area of the plan area.

Configuration and landscaping of Psiloritis Street

Psiloritis street or “Diagonios” is a significant axis, from a semiological and environmental point of view, which has its starting point from the quarter around the Church of Saint Ioannis and ends in the Central multifunctional core with an imaginary extension up to the area where the largest oil tank of the area was located next to the sea. The aim of the project is that this road is an environmental road with encouragement of pedestrian and cyclist traffic along an alley with large trees that will make walking pleasant, with small shops and with events/uses such as to attract and stop for rest and Recreation.
